Spa Holiday’s In Tuscany
Whether you’re travelling solo, with your significant other or with a couple of kids in tow, Tuscany is the perfect place to relax and pamper yourself. The region has hundreds of amazing spa facilities, beauty therapists and internationally renowned hot springs.
Le Cascate del Mulino
Let’s start with the latter. Tuscany’s hottest tourist attraction is the Cascate del Mulino, a waterfall that is open 24/7 all year round and, wait for it, completely free! This hot spring finds its source deep underground in an ancient volcano. The waters bubble to the surface and trickle down a river to a waterfall just outside the town of Saturnia, where they then gush down into naturally carved travertine pools. The sight is one to be believed and beckons for you to take a dip. After all, who can resist the siren call of water that is naturally 37°C?
The hot springs are extremely popular in the summer and winter months. In the summer, the site becomes a sort of pseudo beach for locals, while in winter, it’s a refreshing and relaxing way to unwind after a long day, as long as you don’t mind stripping down to your bathers in the freezing air!
The hot springs aren’t just famous for their warm water. They’re also attributed numerous health properties from curing psoriasis, eczema and respiratory problems to keeping your skin smooth and youthful-looking. It’s for this reason that a lot of bathers spread the grey spa mud all over their bodies, so don’t be alarmed if everyone looks like space monsters from another planet! Another thing that might be a bit disarming at first is the smell. The high sulfur content in the water tends to tinge the entire area in the scent of rotten eggs. It takes some getting used to, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons.
The pampering doesn’t end here. Tuscany is spoilt for choice when it comes to hot springs and spas. While these aren’t free, they are a great way to while away a day or two lounging on sundecks or doing a few laps in the pools. While you’re at it why don’t you put yourself down for a massage or perhaps a skin or beauty treatment? When wellness is the order of the day, you don’t need an excuse to put yourself first… if only for a little while.
A spa holiday in Tuscany isn’t just about beautifying your outsides, but also taking care of your insides. Tuscany has one of the world’s most natural and seasonal diets. Like most Mediterraneans, Tuscans embrace homemade olive oils, homegrown fruits and vegetables, plenty of fresh fish and not a lot of meat. You won’t see any fast food outlets in its countryside or small towns, where the locals still eat like their ancestors, whether it be a plate of homemade pasta or a soup packed with the vegetables of the season. Follow suit, take notes and you’ll be well onto your way to embracing a healthier you!
After all that relaxing and healthy eating, nothing will sound better than a walk in the countryside, so be sure you bring along a pair of comfortable shoes and get out there and enjoy the fresh air, unpolluted scenery and spectacular natural bounty.
