Enjoy Tuscany with Your Four-Legged Friends

Anyone who shares life with a pet knows the little worries that come with planning a trip. Deciding whether to leave your four-legged companion at home or bring them along on holiday — sometimes fearing unwelcome looks — is never easy.

Fortunately, pets are warmly welcomed in Tuscany, and an increasing number of pet-friendly accommodations make it possible to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing stay with your beloved animal companion.

With its wide open spaces, stunning beaches, and countless outdoor activities, your dog will not only be welcome during your Tuscan holiday — they’ll feel right at home.

A Barking Good Time

Travelling with Your Dog in Tuscany

In Italy, dogs are welcome almost everywhere when kept on a leash, including shopping centres, restaurants, and even many supermarkets, making a holiday with your dog much easier and more enjoyable.

If you are unsure about specific places, the best advice is always to check in advance.

Several museums in southern Tuscany are dog friendly and even encourage visitors to bring their pets. Examples include the Natural History Museum of Grosseto, the Mining Museum of Massa Marittima, the Aquarium of Porto Santo Stefano, and the Archaeological and Etruscan History Museum of Sorano.

For those who prefer outdoor experiences, many beaches also allow access to dogs. In Ansedonia, Follonica, Marina di Grosseto, and Punta Ala, you will find beaches designed especially for our four-legged friends.

To find out which beaches are accessible, we recommend contacting local tourist offices or asking your accommodation provider.

From Woods to Sea

Nature and Walks with Your Dog

Since 2009, dogs accompanied by their owners have been allowed in many public areas throughout Tuscany, including gardens, parks, and selected beaches.

There is truly no reason to leave your pet behind when planning a holiday in Tuscany with your dog.

Beautiful places such as the Tarot Garden in Capalbio or the ancient “Vie Cave” paths of Pitigliano, Sorano, and Sovana offer unforgettable experiences to share with your pet.

The Vie Cave are ancient Etruscan roads carved directly into the tuff rock, once used to transport goods through the forests. These paths remained in use during Roman times and throughout the Middle Ages. Even today, some local farmers still use them on foot.

The scenery is breathtaking — evocative, peaceful, and almost mystical. Both you and your dog will be captivated by the unique atmosphere.

Unfortunately, not all parks allow pets. For example, the Maremma Natural Park does not permit dogs, even on a leash, in order to protect local wildlife, as is common in many protected areas. Checking regulations beforehand is always recommended.

Excursions with Your Dog in Maremma

One of the most enjoyable activities you can share with your four-legged friend in Maremma is a relaxing walk, hike, or even a bike ride immersed in nature.

The Tuscan Maremma offers hundreds of trails perfect for those who love travelling with their dog.

It’s not only an opportunity to explore the stunning Tuscan countryside, but also a wonderful way to strengthen the bond with your pet while enjoying spectacular landscapes together.

For a complete list of walking and cycling routes, we suggest asking your accommodation provider or local tourist offices.

From gentle coastal paths to more adventurous inland trails, you will cross forests, countryside, and hills — and your dog will surely fall in love with this extraordinary region.
